Check the Rhyme: A Rhyming Workshop for Young Writers

Learn how to utilize rhyme in your poetry without sacrificing the poem’s flow or using a rhyme scheme that is too basic. Workshop participants will explore different types of rhyme that can open up possibilities in a poem’s direction and is highly pleasing to the ear. Poet Olu Butterfly Woods provides teens with instruction laced with rhyme games, hip hop examples, and rhyme dictionaries to jumpstart the young writer’s transformation into a BEAST at rhyming.

Co-founding director of Poetry for the People Baltimore, Olu Butterfly Woods is a youth arts instructor, producer of Baltimore's most successful weekly live music venue: Organic Soul Tuesdays, and a distinctive performance poet who has received a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for Poetry. Born in Nigeria, raised in St. Croix, V.I. and Maryland, she is author of a collection of poetry, The Revenge of Dandelions. Olu Butterfly has toured internationally from New York to Paris as a principal dancer with Sankofa Dance Theater, with the band Fertile Ground and independently as a performance poet.
