Outreach Support for Maryland History Day

The Maryland History Day staff offer sessions for both teachers and students.

The sessions in the list below can be conducted either as presentations or workshops:

  • Introduction to National History Day
  • Connecting Classrooms with Primary Sources
  • Research Strategies
  • Developing a strong project
  • Creating Better Exhibits

Teacher Workshops:
Typically 45 minutes to an hour long, the length of the presentation can be adjusted to the needs of the group. Presentations offer an overview of the History Day program, with video clips of sample projects, and include time for questions and discussion. They are good for professional development days, conferences, and groups of teachers at a school.

Classroom Sessions:
Similar to teacher workshops, classroom sessions provide an overview of the History Day theme as well as concrete examples of successful History Day projects, geared to keep students interested and to get them excited about the History Day program. These sessions can be customized for new to History Day classes or more experienced classes that are trying to refine skills.

Critique Sessions to prepare for state and national contests:
Critique sessions are most commonly commenced as students are preparing for higher rounds of competition at the state and national contests. These include in-depth analysis of all aspects of a project. These critique sessions can also be conducted prior to county competition to teach students self and group critical analysis skills.

Other Resources:
Invite experts from your community to come to your school to mentor students - archivists, librarians, museum curators, documentary filmmakers, and others.
