The Maryland Center for the Book will launch Maryland’s first-ever statewide community reading program, One Maryland One Book. The selected book is A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League by Ron Suskind. The kickoff will take place at the Enoch Pratt Central Library at 400 Cathedral Street, Baltimore. Present will be Katie O’Malley, First Lady of Maryland and Honorary Chairperson for One Maryland One Book, who will host the celebration, and the subject of the book, Cedric Jennings.
Reading can enrich a child’s life by freeing the imagination, sparking creativity and developing intellectual curiosity. This is certainly true of Maggie Tighe, an 11th grade student who attends Governor Thomas Johnson High School--she is one of six national winners in the annual Letters About Literature contest. Sponsored by the Maryland Center for the Book at the Maryland Humanities Council, the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, and Target Stores, Maggie Tighe chose Monocacy Middle School Library in Frederick as the library to receive a $10,000 library reading grant provided by Target in honor of her achievement. Congratulations, Maggie!
