Music of the Movement: A Sustaining Voice

The Final Event of the MLK Initiative

Congressman John Lewis and Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon join scholars Dr. Portia Maultsby and Dr. Tricia Rose for Music of the Movement: A Sustaining Voice November 17, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at Montgomery College-Takoma Park/Silver Spring. This event will feature a discussion of the music of the Civil Rights Movement--past and present.

Moderated by ABC TV 7/WJLA News Anchor Maureen Bunyan, speakers will discuss how field hollers and spirituals became protest songs, how soul singers and funk musicians joined forces with the Civil Rights Movement, and how hip hop has influenced Civil Rights over the past two decades. The Bowie State University Gospel Choir will also perform.

This free public program will be held in the new Performing Arts Center at 7995 Georgia Ave, Montgomery College-Takoma Park/Silver Spring, 20910 at 7:30 p.m.

If you can come early, spoken word artist Michelle "Love the Poet" Nelson will present a free public performance in the Black Box Theater at the Performing Arts Center. During her 10 years of performing as a spoken word poet, Nelson has presented her powerful and substantive spoken word performance on stage, radio, CD, DVD, and, most recently, on MTV. Her perfomance begins at 12:30 p.m.
