Picturing America

Picturing America, an exciting new initiative from the National Endowment for the Humanities, brings great American art into classrooms and libraries nationwide. Through this innovative program, students and citizens gain a deeper appreciation of our countrys history and character through the study and understanding of its art. The nations artistic heritage—our paintings, sculpture, architecture, fine crafts, and photography—offers unique insights into the character, ideals, and aspirations of our country.

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks became an icon of the American Civil Rights Movement by courageously refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama commuter bus on December 1, 1955. This act sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted for more than a year. It also thrust the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as leader of the boycott, into the forefront of the African American struggle for justice and equality. In 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that assigned bus seating based on race was unconstitutional and officially outlawed it in the United States.

One Maryland, One Book- Cedric Jennings

The Maryland Center for the Book, a program of the Maryland Humanities Council, is pleased to launch One Maryland One Book—the first-ever statewide community-centered reading program designed to encourage everyone in the state to read and discuss one common book. This years selection—A Hope in the Unseen by Ron Suskind—is rich and multilayered. It was selected not only because it offers the opportunity to discuss important and highly relevant topics such as education and socioeconomics, but also because it presents the opportunity to talk about race and race relations in Maryland and in America—a common theme running through the Maryland Humanities Councils programming in 2008. Here, Cedric Jennings discusses his experiences first hand in a series of interviews at Montgomery College.
