The Almighty Oyster

This presentation traces the evolution of the oyster industry in Maryland from the colonial period to the mid-twentieth century. John Wennersten details the rise of the oyster from a poor people's food to a status delicacy. As the desirability of oysters rose, deadly violence broke out among watermen over access to the oyster beds in the Chesapeake Bay, Tangier Sound, and the tributary rivers, leading to the notorious "Oyster Wars." Tragically, its national and international popularity led to over-harvesting and the demise of what had once been called the Almighty Oyster.

A Community Known as Ridgley - From Emancipation to Today

This program is part of an Open House event. Our goal is to make people more aware of the history of this small rural community founded by emancipated people beginning in 1871. Their influence can still be felt today. However, as the area becomes more urbanized the view of a rural community gets lost amongst the fast food stores and shopping strips. The Open House will give an opportunity to talk with and listen to people who are scholars in genealogy and the Rosenwald School movement. A tour of the Ridgley community will be offered.

Location:
Arthur and Mary E. Ridgley House
