How to Apply for a Grant

Let's get started!

1. Check to see if your organization meets the qualifications.

If you can answer 'yes' to all five of these questions, you are eligible to apply for a grant.

i. Is your organization a nonprofit?
ii. Are the humanities a key component to your project?
iii. Have you indentified humanities scholars or other experts to support the project?
iv. Will your project engage and benefit Maryland participants?
v. Do you have matching funds to support project costs?

2. Determine what type of grant best fits your needs.

3. Carefully review the Grant Program Application Guide.

4. Complete a Letter of Inquiry (Major Grants only) by registering through the online application system. Letters of Inquiry for Major Grants must be received by March 1 for the spring round and by September 1 for the fall round. Opportunity Grant applicants may skip this step.

5. Fill out the application (after you've completed your Letter of Inquiry).

6. Complete the application online and electronically submit he form by midnight on the deadline date.

There are five parts to the application that must be completed:

Basic information - Summary of the project, information about the applicant organization

Narrative - More detailed information about the organization, project, team, work plan and evaluation process

Budget - detailed budget form with instructions. Click here for Budget instructions and the Budget form.

Appendix - supporting documents such as resumes and letters of commitment from partners
