Students Advance at National History Day

Competition is stiff and tension is high at the National History Day competition at University of Maryland, College Park!

On Tuesday, advancers in the junior division were announced and two Marylanders were among them. Ryan Burton from Milton Somers Middle School in Charles County advanced his documentary on Benjamin O. Davis. (more…)

Students Bear their Skills at National History Day

Fifty Maryland students–accompanied by History Bears–are competing for honors in the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland, College Park. They (students, not bears) submitted research papers, documentaries, websites, exhibits, and performances for judging—competing with students from across the nation to take home awards and scholarships. Winners will be announced on Thursday, so root for your favorite student, school, and county for the next few days and look for an announcement on Friday about our Maryland winners! (more…)

The Right Way to Research

Why do they call it “research” and not just “search” or “looking something up?”

That’s because the research process is just that–a process–not something that can be accomplished in one sitting, or at the last minute.

Research means that you have to try diverse types of sources, such as journals, magazines, photographs, websites, databases, newspapers, and books. You also have to approach a topic from many angles, trying to get all sides of the story. Research implies that you have to dig deeper than just the surface level of information. You have to take more than one look!
