Join Maryland’s Biggest Book Group!

Be there when it all begins! Join MHC and the Maryland Center for the Book for the launch of Maryland’s first-ever statewide community reading program, One Maryland One Book.

Stop by the Enoch Pratt Central Library in Baltimore on June 14 at 11:00 am for the program launch and you may receive a FREE copy of the selected book, A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League by Ron Suskind.

Hosted by Katie O’Malley, First Lady of Maryland and Honorary Chairperson for OMOB, the event will give readers a chance to meet the book’s subject, Cedric Jennings. OMOB will unite Marylanders through the shared experience of reading the same book and participating in book-centered discussions and programs at public libraries, high schools, colleges and universities, museums, and bookstores. This summer, dig into a good book with other Marylanders who are reading and talking about A Hope in the Unseen.

There’s lots of food for thought in this book. It demonstrates how it really does take a village to raise a child. Cedric had lots of support from his church and from a few teachers in his school who went the extra mile, in addition to the strong support from his mother. And, of course, Cedric was a smart young man with an incredible drive to succeed, which was a major factor in his success.

We should all consider how we can support the many children in our communities who may not be as smart as Cedric. They could all use mentoring and strong educations in order to succeed. Our future success at the community and societal level depends on our young people and their education.

Greetings from Allegany County! I was impressed with the way Jane described this book.

Our program out here in Western Maryland is just gearing up. We’ve had 120 or so already read the book, that I know of; plus we have the high school honors English classes around the county all reading the book, thanks to support from the Bank of America Foundation.

Was wondering if I could quote you Jane, in our advertisments out here, on your discription of the book, if you see this message?

Wishing Maryland & the Center for the Book a fruitful 1st One Maryland One Book!

    Dear Linda Burkey:

I have just checked this website and found your request. Yes, you may quote me, if it is helpful at this late point in the project.
I’m impressed with how you have gotten your honors English classes reading the book.

Last weekend, we had one of our high schools present a Reader’s Theater version of A Hope in the Unseen, adapted for the stage by Carol Burbank. This was well-done and got a number of high school students involved in the production and then their parents and the community were the audience.
