Who was George C. Marshall?

In a recent Daily Record article, columnist Fraser Smith reflects on the significance of Maryland History Day (and George C. Marshall):

I spent an uplifting Saturday recently at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, helping to judge entries in a history contest organized by the Maryland Humanities Council.

I was one of more than 100 volunteers who reviewed a variety of projects: documentaries, essays, Web sites and illustrations.

I have been thinking of this prodigious effort by the council as a rescue operation. What or whom, you may ask, was being rescued?

Nothing less than our democracy.
